Engebø Rutile and Garnet
The realization of the Engebø project will establish Nordic Mining as a long term, climate friendly supplier of natural rutile and almandine garnet.
A World-Class Mineral Resource Developed to Global Standards
The Engebø deposit ranks among the largest undeveloped rutile resources worldwide and boasts some of the highest natural TiO₂ grades compared to current producers and emerging projects. In addition to rutile, the deposit contains substantial volumes of premium almandine garnet, supporting a long-term, dual-mineral operation.
The project is being developed with a strong commitment to international best practices in environmental protection, health, and safety. Powered by local hydroelectric energy, the process plant will operate on renewable sources. Strategically located by a deep-water quay, Engebø offers efficient logistics to both European and global markets, reducing its physical footprint and limiting environmental impact.
Independent studies confirm that Engebø will have the lowest climate gas emissions among all titanium feedstock producers globally. The integrated approach – producing both rutile and garnet – ensures efficient resource utilization, risk mitigation, strong economic returns, and valuable opportunities for future expansion.
A Strategic Long-Term Supplier of High-Grade Rutile and Almandine Garnet
Engebø holds a strategic position in Europe as a long-term producer of high-grade rutile and almandine garnet, with excellent access to key overseas markets.
Rutile is a premium titanium mineral, valued for its high titanium dioxide (TiO₂) content. It plays a critical role in producing both white pigments and titanium metal. Due to its superior purity and stability, rutile is the preferred source for industries such as aerospace, defense, and medical sectors. It is essential in manufacturing lightweight, high-strength titanium alloys for applications in aircraft, turbines, and armor. Additionally, rutile’s versatility extends to welding and other industrial applications. As a strategic raw material, rutile supports industries demanding durability, a high strength-to-weight ratio, and advanced manufacturing capabilities.
Nordic Mining has secured two Offtake Agreements for rutile concentrate – one with the reputable Japanese trading house Iwatani Corporation and another with a large European customer.
Almandine garnet is a high-performance mineral known for its exceptional hardness, durability, and abrasive properties. It is primarily used in industrial abrasive applications, particularly for applications such as waterjet cutting, sandblasting, and surface preparation across aerospace, automotive, and manufacturing industries. Its ability to provide precise and efficient cutting and cleaning makes it indispensable in high-precision environments. Almandine garnet’s low dust generation and eco-friendly profile further enhance its appeal in sustainable industrial practices.
Nordic Mining also has an Offtake Agreement with the BARTON Group for almandine garnet.
